It was fantastic to provide the structural engineering for the Major League Baseball's beautiful centre batting cage structure which gave visitors to the three-day festival an immersive digital baseball experience of hitting a home run!
Located on Trafalgar Square, with no fixings allowed, this temporary structure comprising a series 4m high, cantilevering fins required detailed analysis.
To limit adverse deflections, a base frame was proposed which provided sufficient stiffness to form a fixed base whilst safely distributing both permanent and variable actions into the pavement
Given the clamped connections and combination of both steel and aluminium elements, a prototype fin was built and loaded, and this feedback was built into our finite element model to ensure safe, yet, economic solution.
